Bluestone Walkway “Experience” in New Hope, PA
Today, February 27, 2012 we started a new project in New Hope, Pennsylvania building a new Bluestone walkway for a great client that really appreciate the art of her landscape. This morning we painted the walkway out and Mrs. Norris said to us to design the walkway so that as you walk towards the house from the driveway that it is an “experience” . Her wish was our command. We decided to get a little creative and add a slight curve to the walkway to take your eye into the yard and then curved back to the house so that the approach to the house was the final touch to the “experience” of walking down Mrs. Norris’ new walkway. And that it is. What a beautiful farm and home nestled back into the woods with great views of the country. Building a new front walkway brings this wonderful property one step closer to completion.
In the first photo you can see that we have painted the walkway design out in the yard. We will typically spray 6″-8″ wider on either side for the digging width and for the stone to carry past where the finished product will actually be installed. This makes for a more secured base. You will also notice a slight flare at the end of the walkway. This is a common design to lead foot traffic in from both directions of the walkway.
In the second photo you will see that we have dug the new walkway out and installed our 3/4″ modified, crushed stone base. The stone is tamped with a vibratory plate every 4″ for proper compaction. There is a total of 8″ of stone for the base of this walkway. As you can see we piled the dirt from the dig up next to the walkway. We will use some of the dirt to finish grade along the edges of the walkway when we are complete. The remaining dirt we typically haul away. In this case, we left the dirt onsite at the request of our client.
Photo number three is the finish product. The guys did a great job. The total number of sq. ft. of this walkway is approximately 500 sqare feet. Our crews completed this project in 2 days which could be a record? Another successful project and satisfied customer.
