The Ultimate Guide to Inground Pools: Installation, Types, Maintenance, and More

Affording a Pool is Easier Than You Think!

Introduction

The Ultimate Guide to Inground Pools

Inground pools are more than just a luxurious addition to a home—they’re a lifestyle enhancement. Offering a private oasis for relaxation, entertainment, and exercise, an inground pool can significantly increase your home’s value and appeal. However, the process of selecting, installing, and maintaining an inground pool requires a thorough understanding of various factors to ensure you make the best decision for your property and lifestyle. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about inground pools, from the different types and their unique benefits to the detailed installation process and long-term maintenance requirements.

Types of Inground Pools

Choosing the right type of inground pool is the first step in your journey. Each type offers distinct advantages and potential drawbacks, depending on your specific needs, budget, and aesthetic preferences.

  1. Concrete Pools

    • Durability and Longevity: Concrete pools are the most durable and customizable type of inground pool. They are built to last, with a lifespan that can exceed several decades if properly maintained.
    • Design Flexibility: One of the main advantages of concrete pools is their design flexibility. You can create any shape, size, or depth, and include custom features like waterfalls, grottos, and intricate tile designs.
    • Installation Time: The construction of a concrete pool is labor-intensive and time-consuming, often taking 3 to 6 months. This timeline includes excavation, steel framework installation, plumbing, electrical work, and the curing of the concrete.
    • Surface Finish: Concrete pools can be finished with plaster, tile, or pebble, each offering a unique aesthetic. However, these surfaces require regular maintenance to prevent algae growth and maintain water quality.
  2. Fiberglass Pools

    • Quick Installation: Fiberglass pools are pre-fabricated in a factory and shipped to your home in one piece. This allows for a much quicker installation process, typically taking 1 to 2 weeks from start to finish.
    • Low Maintenance: The non-porous surface of fiberglass pools resists algae growth, making them easier to clean and maintain than concrete pools. The smooth surface also means fewer chemicals are needed to keep the water balanced.
    • Durability: While fiberglass pools are less customizable than concrete pools, they are highly durable and can last for decades. The flexibility of the fiberglass shell reduces the risk of cracks, even in areas with fluctuating soil conditions.
    • Limitations: The main limitation of fiberglass pools is their size and shape. Since they are pre-manufactured, there are fewer options for customization. However, many homeowners find the available options sufficient for their needs.
  3. Vinyl Liner Pools

    • Cost-Effective: Vinyl liner pools are typically the most affordable type of inground pool. They offer a good balance between customization and cost, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious homeowners.
    • Customizable Shapes: Vinyl pools are built using a flexible liner that fits into a frame, allowing for a wide variety of shapes and sizes. This makes them more customizable than fiberglass pools, though less so than concrete pools.
    • Maintenance Considerations: The vinyl liner needs to be replaced every 7 to 10 years, depending on use and exposure to the elements. While this adds to the long-term cost, the initial installation is quicker and less expensive.
    • Soft Surface: The vinyl liner provides a smooth, soft surface that is gentle on the skin and resists algae growth. However, it is also more susceptible to punctures and tears, requiring careful handling of pool accessories and pets.

The Installation Process

Installing an inground pool is a significant project that involves careful planning and coordination. The process can vary depending on the type of pool, local regulations, and the complexity of the design, but generally follows these steps:

  1. Design and Planning:

    • Initial Consultation: The process begins with an initial consultation with a pool contractor. During this phase, you’ll discuss your vision, budget, and any specific features you want, such as a hot tub, waterfall, or custom lighting.
    • Site Assessment: The contractor will assess your property to determine the best location for the pool. This involves checking the soil condition, slope, drainage, and access for construction equipment.
    • Design Proposal: Based on your input and the site assessment, the contractor will create a design proposal, including a 3D rendering of the pool. This proposal will outline the pool’s dimensions, materials, and any additional features.
    • Cost Estimate: You’ll also receive a detailed cost estimate, which includes the price of the pool, installation, and any extras. It’s important to review this carefully and make sure it aligns with your budget.
  2. Permits and Approvals:

    • Zoning and Building Codes: Before construction can begin, you’ll need to obtain the necessary permits from your local building department. This may involve submitting the design plans for review to ensure they comply with zoning and building codes.
    • HOA Approval: If you live in a community with a homeowners’ association (HOA), you may also need to get approval from them. The HOA may have specific rules regarding the size, shape, and location of pools.
    • Environmental Considerations: In some areas, environmental regulations may affect your pool installation. For example, you may need to protect certain trees or manage stormwater runoff.
  3. Excavation and Site Preparation:

    • Marking the Site: Once all permits are in place, the construction team will mark the site where the pool will be installed. This involves outlining the pool’s shape and ensuring it is positioned correctly in relation to the house and other features.
    • Excavation: The excavation process involves digging the hole for the pool. The depth and shape of the excavation depend on the pool design and any additional features, such as a deep end or integrated spa.
    • Ground Stabilization: In areas with unstable soil, the construction team may need to stabilize the ground before continuing with the installation. This can involve adding gravel or compacting the soil to prevent settling.
  4. Pool Shell Installation:

    • Concrete Pools: For concrete pools, this phase involves installing a steel framework, plumbing, and electrical work before pouring the concrete. The concrete is then sprayed or poured into the framework and left to cure.
    • Fiberglass Pools: The fiberglass shell is delivered to the site and carefully lowered into the excavation. The team ensures it is level and properly aligned before backfilling the area around the shell with gravel or sand.
    • Vinyl Liner Pools: A frame is constructed around the excavation, and the liner is fitted into place. The liner is smoothed out, and any air pockets are removed before the pool is filled with water.
  5. Plumbing and Electrical Work:

    • Plumbing Installation: The plumbing system includes the pool’s filtration, heating, and circulation systems. Pipes are installed to connect the pool to these systems, and any water features, such as fountains or waterfalls, are plumbed at this stage.
    • Electrical Work: Electrical wiring is installed to power the pool’s lighting, pump, heater, and other equipment. This work must be done by a licensed electrician to ensure it meets safety standards.
  6. Finishing Touches:

    • Tiling and Coping: For concrete pools, tiles are applied to the pool walls and floor, and coping (the edge around the top of the pool) is installed. This gives the pool a finished look and helps protect the concrete.
    • Decking and Landscaping: The area around the pool is finished with decking, which can be made of concrete, pavers, or wood. Landscaping is also added to enhance the pool’s aesthetic and integrate it with the surrounding environment.
    • Water Features and Accessories: Any additional features, such as waterfalls, slides, or hot tubs, are installed during this phase. The team will also set up pool furniture, lighting, and other accessories.
  7. Filling and Testing:

    • Filling the Pool: Once construction is complete, the pool is filled with water. The team will test the water chemistry to ensure it is balanced and safe for swimming.
    • System Testing: The pool’s filtration, heating, and lighting systems are tested to ensure everything is functioning correctly. The contractor will also walk you through how to operate and maintain these systems.

Maintenance of Inground Pools

Maintaining an inground pool is crucial to ensuring its longevity and the safety of those who use it. Regular maintenance tasks include cleaning, chemical balancing, and equipment inspection.

  1. Daily Maintenance:

    • Skimming the Surface: Use a skimmer net to remove leaves, bugs, and other debris from the pool’s surface. This should be done daily to prevent the debris from sinking to the bottom and becoming harder to remove.
    • Emptying the Skimmer Basket: The skimmer basket collects debris from the water as it circulates through the filtration system. Empty the basket regularly to ensure proper water flow and filtration.
  2. Weekly Maintenance:

    • Vacuuming the Pool: Use a pool vacuum to clean the bottom and sides of the pool. This can be done manually or with an automatic pool cleaner.
    • Brushing the Walls: Brush the pool walls and floor to prevent algae growth and keep the surfaces clean. Pay special attention to areas with low water circulation, such as steps and corners.
    • Testing Water Chemistry: Test the water’s pH, chlorine levels, and alkalinity using a pool test kit. Adjust the chemical levels as needed

FAQ

Popular Question

Here are some of the more popular questions that we are asked by our customers in Philadelphia looking to build a new swimming pool.

All swimming pool projects in Philadelphia area will require a topographical survey plan by a third party engineering firm. Once that is completed a permit application needs to be applied for and submitted for approval. In some cases, the project will need HOA and/or Conservation approval. Once the permit is approved our crews can typically start the pool project within 2-4 weeks of permit approval if the weather permits.
